# New York University Wk3 Hypothesis Testing Null Supposition Discussion

### Question Description

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

Hypothesis testing is a process used by statisticians to make a decision about subjects that are objective, and data-based. There are four potential outcomes of hypothesis testing and they are the null is true and it is accepted, Type 1 error (rejecting a null that is true), the null is false and it was rejected, and Type 2 error (accepting a null that is false) (Corty, 2016).

The null is true, which is the need for a firefighter, the action can be to reject or not to reject: To explain each outcome, let’s introduce a scenario, bob lives alone and while bob was sleeping, he heard the fire alarm. However, Bob does not know that there is a fire in the attic, therefore, Bob’s decisions are the two possible outcomes.

• The fire alarm went off and Bob woke up and checked the house and saw that there was no fire. Therefore, he rejects the notion that there is a fire and rejected the firefighter’s help. This outcome is the wrong decision because there is a fire in the attic, which bob did not see. Therefore, this is a type 1 error, because the null (need for a firefighter) is rejected when the null is actually true. Outcome: Type 1 error (the null is true, and it was rejected).
• The fire alarm went off and Bob woke up and checked the house and saw that there was no fire, but he smelled smoke. Therefore, he accepted the notion that there might be a fire and accepted the firefighter’s help. This outcome is the correct decision because he did not reject the null because there was a fire in the attic. Outcome: null is true, and it is accepted

The null is false, which is there is a need for a firefighter, the action can be to reject or not to reject: To explain each outcome, let’s introduce a scenario, bob lives with wife and kids and while bob was sleeping, he heard the fire alarm. However, Bob does not know that there is no fire, the alarm went off because the wife was cooking and the smoke triggered the alarm, therefore, Bob’s decisions are the two possible outcomes.

• The fire alarm went off and when Bob woke up, he panicked and did not check the house for a fire. Therefore, he accepted the notion that there might be a fire because of the fire alarm and accepted the firefighter’s help. Therefore, this is a type 2 error, because the null (need for a firefighter) is accepted, when the null is actually false because there was no fire, it was the smoke from cooking that triggered the alarm. Outcome: Type 2 error (the null is false, and it was accepted).
• The fire alarm went off and when Bob woke up and he checks the house for a fire and noticed it was the smoke from the wife’s cooking that triggered the alarm. Therefore, he rejected the notion that there might be a fire and rejected the firefighters’ help, which was the correct decision. Outcome: the null is false, and it was rejected.
