Assignment Task

With reference to a) a manufacturing organisation and b) a service organisation and c) a retail organisation, compare and contrast the activities within operations management across these sectors. Using a specific organisation of your choice for each of these sectors, you will need to consider factors such as:

  • Sector specific input-transformation-output issues – e.g. the relative importance of management of materials, products or people
  • Reliance on specialised materials OR specialised staff to deliver the product or service
  • The role of logistics
  • How performance is measured
  • How quality is measured
  • Location decision
  • Other appropriate factors would also be accepted- e.g. managing capacity and demand, process design.

You should consider three of the above for your discussion.

You use the specific template provided.

SPECIFIC REPORT GUIDELINES

  1. Title page

The report should have a cover page including the names of the organisations you have chosen for each of the sectors.

  1. Contents page

This should be a separate page on which the sub headings are listed along with the corresponding page number aligned neatly.

  1. Introduction

A brief introduction to operations management and the content of the report.

  1. Main body

Your discussion should compare and contrast the role and activities of operations management within the different sectors selected based on particular sector characteristics and required outcomes. For example, measuring quality performance in the services or not-for profit sectors can be much more challenging than in the manufacturing sector and health and safety considerations in construction will differ greatly from those in retail.

  1. Do not give your own thoughts and opinions

Your work must be supported by relevant sources of information and linkage to theories and concepts as provided in your lecture notes and from the recommended reading and other relevant sources of information. You need to ensure that these sources are accurately referenced.

  1. Summary

Provide a brief summary of your discussion for the three different sectors. It should contain nothing for which there was no evidence/discussion in any part of the main body.

  1. Referencing

When you write about the relevant aspects of operations management, ensure that you reference your

work correctly using UCB academic writing conventions, as explained in your Student Handbook.

  1. Analysis

In addition to identifying differences and similarities, an analysis of why they might occur and the implications for organisations in those sectors, will score higher marks.

  1. Sentence structure, grammar and spelling

Avoid long and complicated sentences (not longer than 15 –20 words).

Check your work for spelling and avoid silly mistakes like incorrect spelling of the name of the organisation. Also remember that in a formal report you must write in the 3rd person and use formal language so that the report reads as a professional piece of work.

  1. Proof reading and report format standards.

Ensure that your report is proof read for: grammar, syntax and spelling errors. Ensure that your report follows UCB guidelines regarding: margins, font style, line spacing, and headers/footers.

General Assignment Guidance

TEAMWORK AND ITS ASSESSMENTShould this assignment require you to work as part of a team, you will receive an individual grade based upon your performance as well as personalised feedback. The module leader will explain how your individual grade and feedback will be determined.
Importance of Word Counts and Presentation TimingsAssignment word counts and presentation timings should always be observed. Ignoring a word count increases significantly the risk of your work losing marks because it lacked structure, flow, focus and clarity. Timings must be observed for assessed presentations for the same reasons.
