ELAC Do Low Trust Societies Do Better in A Pandemic Article Evaluation

Evaluate an article with the requirements uploaded.

  • What is the goal of this article? To explain? To announce? To tell a story? To sway your opinion? Some combination thereof?
    • What is the tone of the piece? How can you tell?
  • What kind of language is being used? Pointing back to tone, how does word choice in this article affect the overall tone?
  • Is the author showing a bias? If so, how can you tell?
  • How is the piece organized? Are there headings or subheadings? Make note of the topic sentences—if you can’t find them, what does that suggest about the organization of the piece?
  • Does the piece use transitions effectively? What’s the sentence structure like?
  • Are the claims made (if any/if appropriate) well-supported? Is the author using good support, or is the support lacking in some regard? How?
    • Are there logical fallacies? If so, which ones?
  • What’s the overall impact? Can you follow what’s being discussed, or is it too jargon-laden or poorly constructed to follow?
  • Pick apart the visuals—what kind are they? Where are they positioned? What are they trying to accomplish with them? Are they effective? Slanted? Frivolous?
  • How do you feel about the article once you’ve finished reading? What’s your final assessment? Did the author complete what he or she set out to do? If so, what do you think contributed to this outcome? If not, what could have been done better (in terms of content, construction, or organization)?
